Dog Tags (Law)
The Control of Dogs Order 1992 states, every dog while in a highway or in a place of public resort shall wear a collar with the name and address of the owner inscribed on the collar or on a plate or a badge attached to it. Exemptions are working and service dogs. Owners can be fined up to £2,000 for no tag by the local authorities or the police.

Microchips (Law)
As from 6th April 2016 all dogs from the age of 8 weeks will need to be microchipped. You can be fined £500 if your dog is not microchipped, also, you can be fined £500 if your dog is registered on a database that is not on the recommended list, (see Gov.UK) You are responsible for keeping your dog's microchip information up to date and your dog still requires a tag as above.

Rule 57 of the Highway Code - Dogs or other animals in cars
When in a vehicle make sure dogs or other animals are suitably restrained so they cannot distract you while you are driving or injure you, or themselves, if you stop quickly. A seat belt harness, pet carrier, dog cage or dog guard are ways of restraining animals in cars.
Drivers of vehicles with dogs unrestrained in them, can now face a fine of £2,500.
